Aunt Amy with Omega and the cake decorated like a fox's head

We are going to be trick or treating and celebrating a birthday at our house this year! We’ll be getting our boo on and celebrating a birthday!

It is also time for a fall reset of my cleaning routines including dusting. It isd all happening at our house this year.

celebrating at our house

Meg Ready for Trick or Treat and Birthday Celebration

Last year, trick or treating was in the my daughter’s neighborhood. So was her birthday celebration.

This year we’re planning a birthday celebration for our youngest granddaughter at our house. Her birthday is the 31st of October. The night will be combined with trick or treating in the subdivision across the street. It’s full of families with the right age kiddos. Bonus… sidewalks!

Nancy, her mom and our oldest daughter will be overseas during this time. She is part of the church mission to Cambodia team who will be traveling to train local women to help with teach the the Word. She’ll miss this year’s birthday celebration.

Though their subdivision is beautiful, the few kids are past the trick or treat age. So Omega asked if we would host her birthday and Trick or Treat!  Of course we will!!

I am confident she all ready has it all mapped out in her mind. I just have to find out what that is!

getting the party ready: dusting

sad…spider strand in the sunlight

A tell tell sign? There is a single spider web strand between two pieces of Turkish pottery on the Chinese buffet. Yikes!

What does mean? I need to get on the ball with more fall decorating!  Time to bring down the rest of the fall storage bins.

But first, I need to do some dusting. Laundry and vacuuming is routinely done by Jim. Dusting is up to me.

Don’t Let the Dust Settle!

Meg and Me last year

I admit it. I don’t like to dust. My usual schedule is to dust about ever other week. Obviously I have fallen behind.

I’d rather hang out with my loved ones or read a book!

It isn’t even procrastination. I just have fallen out of the habit of routines when cleaning.

Why?

I have lots of reasons like hurting my knee that meant I had to go to physical therapy. We did some overnight baby sitting.

Life changes came when the last child moved out meaning we are truly empty nesters who are creating new schedules, a new lifestyle with just the two of us. As I reflect on that, I realized adjusting to that is taking time.

The Art of Dusting: Essential Tips and Tools

I am short. With this extended handle, I can actually dust the tall bookcases, window trims out of reach and the low spots so I don’t have to bend. I leave the top of the kitchen cabinets that need some deep cleaning to Jim, my tall husband.

When I dust, I use several items like these micro cloths.

For lamps and other intricate spots, I also use micro cloths.

birthday decorations or not

I usually do not decorate with a Halloween theme, but I do want this night to be fun and special. It will be a family affair. When  Omega and her 4 siblings decide what costumes they will wear that might just provide some inspiration.

Could be we will just be outside with fire and S’mores like we were one October night last year!  With costumes, maybe the decorations will be simple.

Fun and Festive times ahead

You know what?  Something to remember when hosting. Even if you don’t get everything dusted, definitely plan to still have fun!

I hear you with that dusting! We are newly empty nesters, too and if I get the chance to hang out with my kids or try something new with the hubby, rather than dust, I am there!! Trick or treating and birthday parties sound like way more fun!! Ps- who made that cake? It’s fabulous!!

Fun with family always a win for me too over dusting. Amy, our artist daughter made it. She and her sister Meg are genius when they create and decorate cakes. https://bushelandapickle.com/fancy-cakes-from-a-box-so-easy/. Have wonderful week!

Have a wonderful celebration! Cobwebs appear immediately after dusting…if you miss a few? Blame it on that! Have fun!
