How to Build a Whimsical Winter Wonderland: Easy Tablescape with Snowmen Mugs & Bottle Trees

Building a whimsical winter wonderland inside is easy and fun! Just envision it on your table. There is whimsy about a snowman!

After the Christmas holidays, I kept the snowmen mugs out along with the handcrafted snowman on a pole. The bottle trees also stayed out. When the snow season passes, they’ll all be packed in bins and put in the attic.

I love having the snowmen out! The addition of the bottle trees really complete the centerpiece.

Typically, during our winters, we do have snow.

Even if you don’t get much or any snow, this whimsical table brings the spirit of winter inside. It’s an informal table setting that will look so cute in your kitchen or dining room. 

In the winter, we often eat in the dining room because it’s cozy with the fire burning. Our kitchen despite great windows and doors is still the coldest room in our old farmhouse. The dining room is a favorite space that opens into the living room. Quirk of the old farmhouse.

Creating the tablescape

I was inspired by my handmade snowman and the cute cheery snowmen mugs. I love the bottle trees with the white and green colors and different heights to really tie the whole look together.

White and ivory candles and shiny mercury glass votives complete the winter tablescape. I keep candle going constantly during the darker days of winter to chase away any gloom.

The sage green (or light olive color placemats were a gift over 5 years ago. The Nordic embroidery design is perfect for this snowman tablescape.  

Just about anything with the Nordic style or design will add to winter Tablescapes or vignettes.

How did I never realize the greens of the placemats and snowmen coffee mugs complemented each other?

Traditionally, winter tablescapes may be white, icy blues. I would add any of your pastels that include greens and pinks too. Keeping the main theme in mind helps.

White and ivory candles and shiny mercury glass votives complete the winter tablescape. It is my usual practice to keep candles burning constantly during the darker days of winter to chase away any gloom. I use mostly battery ones. A word of caution, never leave during candles unattended! Don’t leave them burning when you leave your home either.

White dishes are basic to tablescapes like LBD’s are to your wardrobe. My layered white dishes are a mix of two designs.

These white dinner plates are from Walmart and Home Goods. So many of my white dishes have been broken over the years! I kept a look out for simple cheap white plates to add to my stack. Why do I need a stack? Our family with adult kids and grandchildren numbers 18. Everyone needs a plate!

The nice thing about plain white even with a raised design but no color at all is you can use them all at the same time! The salad plates are from a well used set from Walmart. You can depend on Walmart to always have a set of plain white dishes. There are only random pieces left after years of usage at home and in college apartments.

The silverware is Oneida Cabrina, our everyday silver.

The snowman mugs are no name cute ones that show up around the holidays. Check out your local Dollar stores, Home Goods, Walmart, Micheal’s and others in your area that will have cute dishes and mugs for upcoming holidays.

Mugs are perfect for hot drinks like hot chocolate. The grandkids like to drink cold juice from them too. What can I say? They like special dishes and mugs too.

My mugs have a green base as a scarf with 2 thin red lines. Adding them to the plate stack brings all the elements of the tablescape together. It is a cute way to highlight the green of the placemats. Once drinks are poured, and food is served, they’ll be set aside.

The possibilities are limited only by our own imaginations.

Proper etiquette? No, but it does look cute!  

Most of the time these mugs are used hot chocolate when the grandkids come visit. Occasionally, I even fill one with coffee.

The napkins are regular sized paper ones.

Yep. Using paper for informal table settings is fine. The glasses are basic bistro ones from IKEA.

First, I rounded up everything I thought would look good down the middle of the table with the handcrafted snowman holding the main position.

I included white and green bottle trees.  

When I looked around for votives, I thought there were only the usual sliver ones. To my surprise I found white and green ones. A great add to the green color theme. 

To finish off each place setting, I put a votive and white bottle tree centered above the placemat.

The large center oval votive painted with raised white diamonds is reminiscent of snow crystals. With that at the middle point of the table, I added the white and green bottle trees with votives down the center trying to achieve balance. There was some readjustment of course.

Having the table set and prepared before we sit down to a meal is always nice. I find it often sets the tone of calmness and provided a few moments to the a breath and settle down to enjoy the meal and each other.

Adding lit votives and a roaring fire on a very cold evening made us just a little more thankful for each other and our blessings.

    • We do enjoy our snowman mugs these days. I have used a tray in the past to display the mugs on or table so we both see them and get to use them. Not always possible depending on which kids were still at home! Thanks for coming by

  129. I love snowmen too. Even though we live in Florida we still love snowmen decorations. Right now our temps remind us of temps usually in the north. Temps in the 30’s predicted this week. I’m also leaving my tree up so I can enjoy it more.
